Linux and Toshiba 300CT

This web site was created and is maintained on a Toshiba 300CT laptop comput er. It is setup in a dual boot configuration; Windows 95, and Linux-Mandrake 6. 1. Below is a short description of this installation of Linux on a separate par tition of the hard drive.

Specifications

  • Processor - Pentium 133MMX
  • Hard disk - 1.3Gb
  • RAM - 32Mb
  • Video - C & T 65554 2Mb
  • External 3.5" Disk Drive

Particulars

This laptop was bought second-hand and has no CD-ROM drive, therefore I have to use an old Backpack 4X Parallel Port CD-Drive to load and install software. Because of this the boot disk created by using the install images on the Mandrake CD the install process could not find the CD-Drive.

To get around this I used an install boot disk from a Linux-Mandrake 5.3 distro I have used in the past, and I was able to get a successful install, albeit with some odd characters popping-up in the background during the package seek portion of the install.

The install worked well including proper detection and setup of harware for the X window install.

The only problem is that this model of Toshiba has an unusual aspect ratio, and is capable of a display resolution of 1024 X 600. Not something that most X configuration routines are prepared to setup. So the xconf file had to be hand edited to supply the proper modeline information.

The biggest problem with this whole setup is that the built-in 33.6 modem appears to be a winmodem, so I either have to boot into Win95, or hijack my wifes 55.6 PCMCIA modem (D-link, which worked painlessly with no setup) from her laptop the get online , to surf or update this site.
